Current Guidance On Wearing A Face Mask When Exercising

Face masks have become the new normal for many of us, and are worn in just about every public place to stop the spread of coronavirus. From shopping malls and public transport to schools and offices, face masks are required everywhere, but should face masks be worn when exercising? Here we’ll take a look at the evidence behind wearing face masks when exercising.

Current Guidance On Wearing A Face Mask When Exercising

The World Health Organization made a statement mid-2020 when the widespread use of face masks was more commonplace which addressed where and when they should be worn. Their guidance at the time, and current guidance now in 2021 is the same – face masks should not be worn when exercising. They highlighted two reasons why this should be the case.

  • It can hinder breathing – we all know that proper lung function depends on the successful exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. When you wear a face mask under normal breathing circumstances, the exchange can take place more or less as normal. However, when you begin to exercise and your breathing becomes deeper and heavier, the barrier which protects you from bacteria and viruses actually hinders this process. You could put yourself at risk of not receiving enough oxygen causing breathing complications.
  • The mask can become wet – this is a major issue caused not only by the sweat the material mask can pick up as you exercise, but also the moisture in the air you breath out. In normal circumstances, your sweat does not accumulate around your mouth but is wiped off, and the moisture in your exhalations simply disappears into the surrounding air. However, with a face mask in place it acts to block the proper expelling of carbon dioxide and moisture. This causes the mask to become wet, making it the perfect breeding ground for bacteria.

Steps To Take To Stay Safe When Exercising With A Face Mask

  1. Maintain your distance from other people. If you are running in an open space such as a park, then it’s not so much of an issue, you simply need to leave space for other runners so you don’t pass anything between yourselves. If you need a break, sit on the ground instead of using a public bench.
  2. Reduce the physical activity. You can wear a mask for light exercise such as walking, however you might want to remove it if you are running either outside or on a treadmill. If you normally did lots of strenuous activity such as rowing or stepping, replace it for a more gentler activity such as curling weights.
  3. Monitor yourself. You know you best, and you will be able to notice if you have any kind of shortness of breath, are feeling light-headed or even dizzy when you are wearing a face mask while exercising. Everybody reacts differently to exercising with face masks on, and if you feel any kind of discomfort you should remove it immediately.
